The draw leaves Jacksonville with its eyes on second place overall in the Spring Season
The Jacksonville Armada FC traveled to Puerto Rico for the first match with Puerto Rico FC this year. The two clubs battled it out but neither could find the breakthrough after 90 minutes.
The stage was set with high hopes Saturday night.
The Armada FC still had a shot at the Spring Season champion title and the two teams were finally meeting after two postponed matches in Jacksonville due to inclement weather.
By the end of the night however, the Miami FC shut out San Francisco 7-0 and became the Spring Season Champions in another match and Jacksonville was bumped out of contention.
The Boys in Blue held their own in Puerto Rico though. Despite consistent attacking from the home team, the Armada FC held strong in the defense.
J.C. Banks recorded the first chance on the offense in the first half. He found his way around the Puerto Rico defenders to take a shot, but it was saved directly by Trevor Spangenberg.
Soon after taking the pitch in the second half, Derek Gebhard had a chance of his own after finding the ball from Jemal Johnson. His effort was headed just barely over the bar.
Armada FC’s offensive push continued all the way through the second half and was sure to pay off in the 88thminute when Pitchkolan found the back of the net. The team did not get on the board though, due to a foul called on Gebhard just before Pitchkolan’s shot.
The stage is now set for a rematch Wednesday in Jacksonville between the two teams, the result of the postponed matches in late June. A win could vault the Armada FC into second place, a prime position in the overall standings.
The match at Hodges Stadium will also be Puerto Rican Heritage Night and the final home game of the Spring Season for the Armada FC. Then the team will close out the season in Indianapolis with Indy Eleven on July 15.
