The Jacksonville Armada FC (2W-4D-1L) begins their 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup bid against Miami United FC (3W-0D-0L) on Wednesday in Hialeah, Fla. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Ted Hendricks Stadium.
“The U.S. Open Cup is an historical tournament that we plan to treat with professionalism and ultimately aim to move on to the next round,” said Armada FC head coach Mark Lowry.
The first appearance by the Armada FC in the U.S. Open Cup was in 2015. The club played the Richmond Kickers (USL) and fell 3-0. In 2016, the Jacksonville Armada FC won 2-1 in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup against the Charleston Battery. The team advanced to play in the Fourth Round against Orlando City SC, but lost 1-0.
Although coming off its first loss this year to North Carolina FC in Week Seven of the NASL Spring Season, Jacksonville is looking to transfer its early success this season over to the U.S. Open Cup in its first meeting in history with Miami United FC.
Miami United FC (NPSL) leads the Sunshine Conference standings with nine points. After knocking off Boca Raton FC (NPSL) in the First Round of the Open Cup, 2-1, look for Miami to be hungry to prove themselves in the next round against the Armada FC.
“This won’t be an easy tie against a dangerous and experienced Miami United,” said Lowry. “We are fully prepared for the challenge ahead and look forward to seeing the players perform at our usual high level.”
The Armada FC hopes to keep the momentum going as the team enters a busy stretch in the schedule. After the match Wednesday, the team travels out to California to take on the San Francisco Deltas on Friday, May 19 at 10:30 p.m. EST.
